Selecting the right Cutting Tools

Selecting the right Cutting Tools is crutial to making money on your jobs.
Your Cutting Tools should be viewed as an investment, as they really are.
Did you purchase them for a short run, or for a full production run?
Many shops do not document any tool life for future referencing, unfortunately this leaves them wondering which tools yield the best cost based performance.

If a job is considered a short run situation, then purchasing a good quality middle of the road cutting tool may get the job done for you. With proper documentation on past tool life, you can rest easy and purchase with confidence.

Building a database to compliment your tool area is fairly easy.
Typically you should include the following fields in your database:

Material, # of pcs, feeds and speeds, operating conditions, machine used
Additionally, Tool manufacturer, and exact edp number
When your done with this, you will have a nice desktop version
for reference A good output might look like this:

Cutting Tool Selector: H.s.s Co endmill Mfgr:Melin Edp:66545
Desc: .500 4fl hss cobalt cc endmill
Material: 4140L Feed Rates=sfm:275 rpm:2,110 Ipm:16.80
pcs completed:38 Opconditions:.500 depth of cut /w/ hp coolant
Machine:H*** 2 axis mill

Armed with this kind of information, you can quickly search your
reference library to select, compare results, and optimize your next run.
As we add vendors to the site, there should be a lot more information
available on this.
